MyQ Community App Survey
Your Input Is Valuable
Your Input Is Valuable
lease participate in this La Costa Ridge HOA survey. The HOA Board wants to know if homeowners are interested in a smartphone app that allows residents greater flexibility managing guest access to the community.
To balance safety and access, La Costa Ridge HOA is considering activating the Liftmaster Keypad MyQ Community App that allows residents greater flexibility managing visitor access. The app will not change current methods for entering La Costa Ridge, but would offer residents who enroll new options that may better fit their lifestyles. The app can put gate access into the hands of homeowners and allow you to more conveniently and precisely manage your guests’ and vendors’ access to the community without contacting Management.
Topics Explained Below:
A short video explaining the functions of the app: https://youtu.be/CctXxX1kIqQ
A longer video explaining how the MyQ Community App is installed and basic functions. While the video highlights use in multifamily buildings, the scenarios for both doors and community gates are similar: https://youtu.be/7XXGweyU-yM
Homeowners with the MyQ Community App can manage entrance into La Costa Ridge without contacting Management. You can allow visitors to open the gate with their own code, be notified when a code is utilized, and/or see a video of the visitor. The directories at the gate monuments will still be available if you prefer not to use the app.
The smartphone application can:
Custom Guest Passes
Using the app, residents will be able to create custom guest passes that expire after a one-time use or set period of time:
In situations where you may be on the phone with the visitor, such as when ordering takeout, you can create a guest pass and simply tell the recipient the code during your phone call.
MyQ Community App Subscriptions
Each household member who wants to use the MyQ Community App on their smartphone needs to subscribe and pay an annual fee to use the service. For example, a couple who each want to manage guests using the app would need to purchase two subscriptions.
How Much Does the MyQ Community App Cost?
In order to make the cost reasonable, La Costa Ridge will need a minimum number of residents to sign up for a MyQ Community subscription. If about 80 subscriptions are requested, we anticipate a $3.50 per month cost per subscription.
Subscriptions would be charged on a per phone basis. In addition, subscriptions would be based on a year-long subscription only. If you decide to cancel your subscription before the annual subscription end date, unfortunately there would be no refund for unused months. Subscriptions would be renewed and paid each year in January.
Does the Association Profit from the MyQ App?
No, the vendor, Control Entry Specialists is paid for their services. Management facilitates the payment.
What are the Benefits of the MyQ Community App?
People who purchase a home in a gated community appreciate the benefits that gates provide. However, some residents may appreciate more flexibility granting access to trusted visitors and service workers.
Currently, the correct way to grant access is to direct your visitors to the directory at each gate where they call you and you open the gate using your phone. However, some residents may struggle with this system. Do you have weekend guests that want to come and go without having to call every time they return from an excursion? Do you travel often and need to allow your landscaping crew access when you are out of town?
Although some residents may resort to giving out their home’s unique gate code in these scenarios, sharing private gate codes erodes the community’s security. Gate codes can be passed around and open the door to criminal activity within our community.
The MyQ Community App tracks each entry into the community of a visitor and can restrict access to specific days and hours for certain visitors, such as service workers.
The HOA board is considering activating the MyQ Community app. The app, an optional program, would not change our current methods for entering the community, such as using the call feature, the keypad at the gates, or your gate remote transmitter. However, the app will offer greater flexibility for residents who need it.
The hope is that by allowing homeowners more options for admitting guests, residents would be less likely to share our private gate codes, which puts the community at greater risk.

The smartphone application can:
- Create custom guest passes that allow your visitor to open the gate themselves. With a guest pass, your visitor will not need to call you to open the gate and you will receive a notification on your phone when the guest pass is used.
- Provide video and audio to verify who is contacting you from the gate keypad. Using your smartphone and the MyQ Community App you can see and talk with your visitor using one-way video and two-way audio. You can then allow or deny access right from your phone.
- Manage your own access to La Costa Ridge. Residents can unlock a gate using their smartphone, which is a handy feature when you are entering the community in a friend’s car or using a car service such as Uber.
Custom Guest Passes
Using the app, residents will be able to create custom guest passes that expire after a one-time use or set period of time:
- Quick Pass: This single-use pass works well for granting access for one-time visitors or deliveries of food, packages, etc. This pass has a two-hour max duration.
- Temporary Pass: Do you need to grant access over several days for weekend visitors or are you expecting a delivery but not sure when it will arrive? Temporary passes, which can be set for a custom period, offer the flexibility you need. They can be set to last for several hours or several days.
- Recurring Pass: This pass is designed to grant access to people that provide recurring services, such as housekeepers, babysitters, dog walkers, etc. Recurring passes can be customized to restrict entry to specific times and days of the week.
In situations where you may be on the phone with the visitor, such as when ordering takeout, you can create a guest pass and simply tell the recipient the code during your phone call.
